YLD (21/07/25) – Redemption

Date

July 25, 2021

Summary

YLD Topic: Redemption

Scripture:

20 When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. 21 What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! 22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Rom 6:20-23)

From Slavery to redemption:

When you are tied, the instinct of it is to get out of it.

Slavery: Being in complete submission to the will of another owned by a master

Redemption: An act of purchasing an individual out from under the bondage of another

Everyone has to make a choice: Slaves to Sin or Slaves to God?

When we choose to be the slave of God, God will bless us with redemption in three areas.

1. From sin to righteousness

  • To do what is right
  • To discern what is right and what is wrong?
    • Olympic runners who came last after helping each other get moved to the finals: character comes first. We need to have God’s character in us.
    • Do nothing out of selfish ambition. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others (Phil 2:3-4)
    • God loves us. He took our spot and paid for our punishment.
  • Runner in a race – we pressed on to finish the race that God has given us
  • When we meet God, we are not judged by our achievement but rather our relationship with Him? Are we like Jesus?

2. From bondage to freedom

  • Home alone (experience the freedom or wish to do anything you want)
  • Freedom is not about doing anything you want rather doing the right thing, have freedom to choose not to do the wrong thing
  • A good example is Joseph; his master’s wife wanted to have a relationship with him but he refused because he did not want to dishonor God
  • He knew God was watching him
  • Jesus paid a big price to free us so we should be careful not to misuse our freedom

3. From death to life

  • When a baby is born, going through different life stages, at the end, death would come. This is the fate of everyone, no exception.
  • Jesus paid for our debt so we would have an everlasting life with God
  • One day, we will have new heaven and new earth. God will dwell among us.
  • No more sickness or tears, all bad things are gone.
  • We will plug in God’s holiness and be like him. We set apart for God to use.
