YLD (21/06/13) – The Great Cloud of Witnesses

Date

June 13, 2021

Summary

YLD Topic: The Great Cloud of Witnesses

Scripture:

15 But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. (Acts 9:15)

The death and resurrection of Jesus is the end of one story but the beginning of another.

  • After Jesus went away to Heaven, he sent his Holy Spirit to Earth.
  • The early believers, who were waiting for a sign form God, were given the Holy Spirit. They went out to preach the gospel.

Today we are looking at the book of Acts. It is a book jammed with history and stories.

  • The full name of this book is the Acts of the Apostles.
  • It was written by Luke, who wrote the Gospel of Luke.
  • It tells us the story of how the disciples and early believers began to spread the Good News of Jesus.

Saul was a bad man. He wanted to find everyone who believed in Jesus and have them arrested or killed.

  • He had stood by and watched as a young believer named Stephen was murdered.
  • The first person to die for believing in Jesus.
  • Stephen was a great witness for God.

o   He stood up for Jesus means sharing his faith when it was not the popular thing to do

o   He was not afraid of those different from him and willing to show the love of Jesus to those in need

One day Jesus appeared to Saul.

  • A bright light blinded Saul, but in that blinding light, he saw that he was wrong.
  • Saul saw that he needed to get right with God.
  • God gave Saul his sight back and Saul became Paul, the most prolific, well traveled, and important leader in the days of the early church.

Saul’s conversion gives us something for which to be thankful and hopeful.

  1. Thankfulness: We should be thankful, that despite our flaws, fears, and failing, God chooses to use us to spread his Word and glorify His name.
    1. The all-powerful God of the universe does not need our help.
    2. He has chosen us. No matter what God loves us. That is something to be thankful for!
  2. Hopefulness: When Paul was confronted with the power and mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, his heart changed and embraced the truth.
    1. Such stories give us hope that those who do not yet believe that Jesus is the Lord can be saved.

Eric Liddell was another great witness for God

  • At the 1924 Olympic in Paris, he famously refused to run on a Sunday, ruling him out of the 100 meters race to which he was best suited.
  • Instead, he took part in the 400 meters race and, against the odds, still won a gold medal
  • God used him and he became a missionary in China
