YLD (21/01/17) – Sermon on “How to deal with an unfair situation?”

Date

January 17, 2021

Summary

(Acts 16:11-40)

In the book of Acts, it gives us many examples that when people get to know Jesus, they are living in a new way. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

In Philippi, Paul and Silas faced a very difficult situation but they were able to endure it. What is their secret?

The journey begins in a place at Philippi in Macedonia.

  1. Paul and his missionary team were called to share Jesus with the people there in Philippi.
  2. There was a slave girl followed them and she had an evil spirit living inside her.
    • The slave girl followed Paul and the rest of the team. She kept shouting and caused a lot of interruptions and disturbance for Paul and the team to share Gospel with the people. She did this for many days.
    • One day, Paul turned around and said to her, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the Spirit left her.
    • Her owners were upset and brought Paul and Silas before the rulers of the city.
    • Paul and Silas were beaten in the public and thrown into jail.
  3. Paul and Silas obeyed God. They did the right thing but ended up being punished as criminals and locked in jail. Why do they deserve this?• Let’s see how did Paul and Silas deal with this unfairness?
    • “About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.” (v25)
      • They chose not to focus on their unfair treatment but to focus on God’s character.
      • What is God’s character? God is powerful and He loves us.
      • When Jesus was put on the cross, he asked his father to forgive those people because they did not know what they were doing.
      • Paul and Silas chose to worship and praise God in their difficulties. This caused the other prisoners to listen to them as they prayed and sang.
      • For believers, we have God’s Spirit in us so we can do the right thing for God. The Holy Spirit gave us power to respond with faith and courage when we are in a difficult situation.
    • God has a purpose for everything.
    • Even though Paul and Silas were wrongly treated, they chose to trust God.
    • God used their difficulties to save the Philippian jailer and his family

Let’s challenge our mindset today! When we face difficulties or an unfair situation, this could be an opportunity for us to draw people to God.
